Source: Putz opts for rehab on elbow

Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz, placed on the disabled list Wednesday, will attempt to rehabilitate his injured right elbow rather than undergo surgery, according to major-league sources.

Putz is suffering from a sprained ligament, strained flexor pronator and an irritated nerve, one source said. There is no timetable yet for his return.

“We know he’s not going to be back anytime soon,” Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson told reporters Wednesday.

Putz left Tuesday night’s game against the Dodgers after throwing only four pitches and issuing a walk to the only batter he faced. He said that he felt stiffness in his elbow and “zinging” through his fingers.

The Diamondbacks elevated setup man Heath Bell to the closer’s role on Wednesday, and Bell earned the save in the team’s 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
