Source: Inge, Pirates agree on deal

Veteran third baseman Brandon Inge has reached an agreement on a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to a major league source.

Inge is coming off right shoulder surgery, which cut short a 2012 season he spent between Detroit and Oakland. He had a .658 OPS and 12 home runs in 83 games.

Inge, 35, has played third base, second base and all three outfield positions during a 12-year major league career. He has also started nearly 350 games at catcher but hasn’t played there since 2008.

Inge is best suited to play third base, but there’s not much of an opportunity at the position after Pedro Alvarez’s 30-homer season in 2012. It appears Inge will have a chance to make the Pirates’ roster as a super-utility player.
