Scioscia, Angels deflect blame in shouting match with Blue Jays' Josh Donaldson
Monday afternoon's contest between the Los Angeles Angels and Toronto Blue Jays featured home runs and a shouting match between the Angels' bench and Toronto third baseman Josh Donaldson.
It happened in the sixth inning, when someone in the Halos dugout took offense with home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez calling a pitch a ball when Donaldson ducked underneath it.
Donaldson, who can be a fiery competitor on the field, thought the Angels were yelling directly at him, so he expressed some frustration back in their direction - but as Mike Scioscia told Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register, “A lot of guys in our dugout took exception to him yelling at our dugout. We weren’t even talking to him. We were talking to the umpire.”
On the other side of the field, though, Donaldson was convinced the comments were, in fact, directed at him: “I'm not here to try and throw anybody under the bus but there was obviously something said to me and I don't just banter or go on a rant like that for anything,” he said. “At the end of the day, you try to turn the page from it. We'll see what happens.”
There are three more games left in this series, so the issue may not be over yet - but then again, it very well could. Baseball disagreements are unpredictable like that.
