Sabathia is his own toughest critic

C.C. Sabathia said it so somebody else didn't have to.

"I suck."

Well, there was more to it than that. The Yankees pitcher on Sunday gave up seven runs on nine hits in five innings in an 8-7, 11-inning loss to the Boston Red Sox. Afterward, according to the New York Daily News, he just let it all out.

"I wish I had an excuse or something," Sabathia lamented. "It sucks. It’s embarrassing. But you have to try to work through it, figure something out and start trying to help this team instead of hurting it."

His ERA went from 4.07 to 4.30 Sunday, when the Yankees had the bullpen warmed up in the fourth inning. They finally pulled Sabathia after a leadoff walk in the sixth.

The Yankees average 3.9 runs per game, ranking 11th in the American League. The pitchers don't have much slack to work with, and it sounds like Sabathia's feeling the tension.

"We didn’t struggle today," Sabathia said. "We scored seven runs and not being able to win that game is unacceptable."
