Royals' Duffy throws WP during intentional BB

Published Sep. 1, 2011 7:34 p.m. ET

Danny Duffy of the Kansas City Royals lobbed the ball over catcher Brayan Pena's head during an intentional walk for a bizarre wild pitch in Thursday's game against the Detroit Tigers.

With Miguel Cabrera on second and Victor Martinez batting in the third inning, Pena signaled for Duffy to throw wide of the plate and put Martinez on. He threw ball four all right - well over Pena's head. For a moment, Cabrera appeared not to notice, staying at second, but it took Pena so long to chase down the ball that the Detroit runner had time to make it to third.

Duffy, a rookie, has thrown four wild pitches this season. This was his first intentional walk.
