Royals add veterans Barmes, Duensing, Ohlendorf
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) The Royals agreed to minor league contracts with veterans Clint Barmes, Brian Duensing and Ross Ohlendorf on Thursday, giving each an opportunity to compete for a roster spot during spring training.
Barmes, an infielder, hit .232 with three homers in 98 games for the Padres last season. The 13-year veteran spent eight seasons with the Rockies, and has also played for the Astros and Pirates.
Duensing went 4-1 with a 4.25 ERA in 55 relief appearances for the Twins last year. The left-hander had a 2.14 ERA in July and August, holding opposing batter to a .192 average over that stretch.
Ohlendorf went 3-1 with a 3.72 ERA in 21 relief appearances over two stints with the Rangers last season. The right-hander has also pitched for the Yankees, Pirates, Padres and Nationals.
Royals pitchers and catchers have their first workout Friday. The full squad reports next week.
