The Colorado Rockies secured their No. 1 offseason target Friday, reaching agreement with free agent Michael Cuddyer on a three-year, $31.5 million contract, according to major-league sources.
The two sides were still working through a final set of issues, but Cuddyer was set to leave the Minnesota Twins, the team that selected him in the first round of the 1997 draft.
Cuddyer, 32, likely will play a variety of positions for the Rockies, including the corner-outfield spots and first and third base.
He batted .284/.346/.459 for the Twins last season with 20 homers and 70 RBIs, and the Rockies valued his character and leadership.
