Rockies put Giambi on 15-day DL

The Colorado Rockies placed five-time All-Star Jason Giambi on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, a day after he strained his left quad running to first base in a loss to the Dodgers.

This is the fifth time the 17-year veteran has been on the disabled list and the first since 2009 with Oakland, when he missed 2 1/2 weeks because of a strained right quad.

Giambi, the AL MVP in 2000 with the Athletics, has 425 career homers, one from tying Billy Williams for 42nd place on the all-time list.

Giambi accepted his role as a part-time player with the Rockies and was re-signed to a minor league deal in January after batting .244 with six homers and 35 RBIs in 87 games. This season, he is hitting .260 with 10 homers and 24 RBIs in 48 games.
