Report: Soriano OK with Yanks trade

Chicago Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano is willing to waive his no-trade clause to join the New York Yankees, but he wants a couple of days to think about it, the Chicago Tribune reports.

“I’m 37,” Soriano told the newspaper. “I want one more chance to go to the World Series. If (the Cubs) don’t have that on their mind (and) they’re preparing the team for 2015 or 2016, it’s too late for me. At the same time, I try to be a champion here. If not, I’ve got to try and do that with another team.”

Asked if he would say no to the Yankees, Soriano told the Chicago Tribune, “No, no, no, no.”

Soriano is batting .254/.287/.467 with 17 homers and 51 RBIs this season. He played for the Yankees from 1999-2003, likely factoring into his decision to green-light a deal. Last summer, Soriano rejected a trade that would have sent him from the Cubs to the San Francisco Giants.

The Yankees, decimated by injuries to multiple key offensive players (Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez, among others) rank 14th in the American League in home runs and 12th in runs scored.

Earlier this week, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported the Cubs and Yankees were discussing a deal for Soriano. However, the teams have been unable to finalize a trade, perhaps because of finances. Soriano is owed just under $9 million for the remainder of this season and will earn $18 million next season, the final year of his contract.
