Report: Ramirez interested in Toronto
Twelve-time All-Star Manny Ramirez is eyeing a return to the American League East with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to comments published Tuesday.
Ramirez, who will be a free agent after the season, told ESPNDeportes.com that he liked the Blue Jays' decision to hire Boston Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell as their manager and would not mind joining him north of the border.
“John has tremendous knowledge of the game, a very pleasant man and he trains ballplayers,” Ramirez said of Farrell, who became Boston’s pitching coach after the 2006 season. Ramirez played for the Red Sox from 2001 to 2008, before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the '08 trade deadline.
“Toronto has made a great acquisition," Ramirez added. "Farrell is a manager for whom I would like to play, and Toronto is a team I've liked since they had all those Dominican players in the ’80s.”
Ramirez was moved by the Dodgers to the Chicago White Sox last season. Between the Dodgers and White Sox, Ramirez hit nine home runs with 42 RBI in 90 games – a season shortened by injuries.
Ramirez, 38, had surgery two weeks ago for a hernia suffered during the season.
“I never was at 100 percent, but I didn't want to stop playing,” Ramirez said. “The doctors told me not to do any baseball-related work for six weeks, which means I will wait until mid-November to begin my winter workouts.”
