Report: Loney, Rays agree to deal

A person familiar with the negotiations says first baseman James Loney and the Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to a $2 million, one-year contract.

The agreement is pending a physical, the person said Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal has not yet been announced. Loney can make an additional $1 million in performance bonuses.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com had reported Sunday night that the Rays and Loney were close to a deal. Rosenthal also reported that the deal likely is the first of several moves the Rays will make this offseason. The team also is looking for a catcher, designated hitter, outfielder and middle infielder.

The 28-year-old Loney, dealt to Boston in August as part of the blockbuster trade that brought Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett to Los Angeles, hit .249 last season with six homers and 41 RBI. He had 90 RBI in each of the 2008 and 2009 seasons but his production has steadily declined.
