Report: Angels interested in Yankees' Eppler as potential new GM

Published Sep. 4, 2015 1:43 p.m. ET

Recent buzz has the Los Angeles Angels eager to find a full-time general manager soon. On Friday, ESPN's Buster Olney reported on Twitter that the club may focus some attention on Billy Eppler, currently the assistant GM of the New York Yankees. Olney even calls Eppler a 'frontrunner' for the Halos' open position:

Eppler's name does come up in a recent roundup of potential GM candidates put together by MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. As Gonzalez mentions, Eppler and a few other candidates were actually on the team's radar back in 2011 before Jerry Dipoto won the job:

The more likely scenario appears to be that the Angels give another young, up-and-coming executive a chance at his first GM job. Billy Eppler (Yankees assistant GM), Damon Oppenheimer (Yankees scouting director) and Thad Levine (Rangers assistant GM) were among the finalists during the Angels' search in 2011 and could factor in heavily this time around.

At any rate, it's obvious the Angels have a clear plan to find a new full-time general manager as quickly as possible. Manager Mike Scioscia, meanwhile, doesn't plan to have much of a hands-on role in determining who that GM may be.

As for Dipoto, his name recently came up in connection with the Seattle Mariners' GM vacancy, so it's quite evident a lot will be happening in the coming weeks...
