Report: A-Rod hires top lawyer

Published Aug. 13, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Facing a fight with the Yankees and MLB that could make it all the way to federal court, Alex Rodriguez reportedly has retained top New York lawyer Joe Tacopina.

Tacopina has had several high-profile criminal cases, including those of Kenneth Moreno, an NYPD officer acquitted of rape, and former senator Hiram Monserrate, who pleaded guilty to using $100,000 of nonprofit funds for his campaign.

“Joe is a fighter, and that is what Alex needs right now,” a source reportedly told the NY Post. “He has been brought on to reinforce the trial team, there’s a possibility this could go all the way to federal court. Joe is known for putting the hammer down, he’s going to take on the Yankees and take on MLB.”

Rodriguez is appealing a 211-game suspension by MLB for his alleged role in the Biogenesis PED scandal, and TMZ reports that he wants the entire ban lifted or he will sue MLB. A-Rod feels "persecuted" by MLB, sources reportedly told TMZ, and that the investigation is "abusive and borderline illegal."

The Yankees, who reportedly want to be rid of Rodriguez and his monster contract, reportedly fined him $150,000 for seeking a second medical opinion without permission. Rodriguez returned to the lineup last week and is hitting .259 with a homer and two RBI.
