Red Sox sign infielder Felipe Lopez
The Boston Red Sox signed Felipe Lopez on Saturday, four days after the infielder was released by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Lopez was cut by the Cardinals one day after he arrived late for a game against Florida. St. Louis general manager John Mozeliak said it wasn't the first time Lopez reported late.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Lopez was signed because Marco Scutaro has an inflamed rotator cuff. He said how much Lopez plays will depend on the health of other players.
Mike Lowell had tests Saturday after getting hit in the jaw by Curtis Granderson's bad-hop single to first in the fifth inning Friday night.
Francona said Lowell is ''clear-eyed, no concussion-like symptoms.''
While tests were negative, Lowell didn't play Saturday in Boston's 7-3 win over New York. Francona said the decision was precautionary.
''He passed everything,'' Francona said. ''There was no reason that from what they did that indicated we couldn't play him.''
