Red Sox, Royals both honor Boston
The “Boston Strong” rallying cry has become ubiquitous in the proud, grieving city after the Boston Marathon bombings.
This weekend, it even has a place on the uniform of an opposing team.
The Red Sox wore a “B Strong” patch on their special home jerseys in Saturday’s return to Fenway Park, with the “B” in classic Red Sox font. That wasn’t a surprise. It was more noteworthy that the visiting team – the Kansas City Royals – wore the same patch on the chest of their blue jerseys.
Major League Baseball has the right to veto the addition of badges to uniforms, but in this case offered full support to the Royals’ decision. As of Saturday night, an official with MLB wasn’t aware of plans for other clubs to wear the patch.
The Royals will wear the patches again Sunday for their doubleheader at Fenway Park. Boston continues its extended homestand this week with series against Oakland and Houston.
