Red Sox-Rays game delayed by lighting problems

Published Aug. 30, 2014 7:46 p.m. ET

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) The start of Boston's game at Tampa Bay has been delayed for 12 minutes due to a stadium lighting outage.

With a thunderstorm in the area, a series of playing field lights at Tropicana Field went out nine minutes before Saturday night's scheduled start time of 7:10.

It took around 20 minutes for the lighting to return to normal levels, with the first pitch taking place at 7:22.

The Rays say the lighting problem was caused by a nearby electrical substation being struck by lightning.
