Red Sox, Drew agree on deal

The Boston Red Sox landed a stopgap at shortstop on Monday, reaching agreement with free agent Stephen Drew on a one-year contract, according to a major-league source.

The deal, which is worth $9.5 million, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, will give the Red Sox time to develop two younger shortstops, Jose Iglesias and Xander Bogaerts.

Drew, 29, returned last season after missing nearly a year due to surgery on his right ankle. He batted a combined .223 with a .657 OPS in 79 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Oakland Athletics.

The A's, after losing Drew, remain without a shortstop. They wanted to re-sign Drew after they declined their end of his $10 million mutual option at the end of the season, paying him a $1.35 million buyout instead.

The top remaining shortstop on the free-agent market is Hiroyuki Nakajima, who has spent his entire career in Japan.
