Rays LHP Moore reportedly will have season-ending Tommy John surgery

Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Matt Moore will have season-ending Tommy John surgery on April 22, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Moore suffered the injury in his second start this season, leaving his April outing against the Royals after just 4 1/3 innings.

He was diagnosed with a partial tear in his ulnar collateral ligament, though he decided to rest for a few days before testing the elbow in a throwing session. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Moore experienced continued discomfort when throwing on flat ground Monday.

Moore, 24, was a first-time All-Star in 2013, when he went 17-4 with a 3.29 ERA and 143 strikeouts in 150 1/3 innings. He finished ninth in the voting for the AL Cy Young Award.

The injury is the latest setback for the Rays'€™ rotation, which also is without right-hander Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) and right-hander Alex Cobb (oblique).
