Rangers recall 2B Odor after DeShields goes on disabled list

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Rougned Odor is back with the Texas Rangers and rookie slugger Joey Gallo has gone to the outfield after Delino DeShields was placed on the disabled list.

The Rangers recalled Odor from Triple-A Round Rock and put DeShields on the 15-day DL before Monday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

DeShields is expected to be out about three weeks after straining his left hamstring in Sunday's loss to Minnesota. The left fielder appeared to slip on the warning track and grimaced even before running into the wall and slumping to the ground.

Odor was in the lineup Monday night at second base, where he started 25 of the Rangers' first 31 games this season before getting sent down with a .144 batting average and 25 strikeouts in 90 at-bats.

Hanser Alberto moved from second based to third. Gallo, called up two weeks earlier to fill in for injured third baseman Adrian Beltre, moved to left field.

''It's tough,'' Gallo said. ''The sun's right in my face. It's a little bigger stadium to play with than Frisco. It should be all right. After the first few innings with the sun going down I'll be fine. I've never really had to battle the sun playing infield so it should be a little different out there.''

Gallo had played a handful of games in left field for Double-A Frisco this season before his call-up to the majors. He had started 10 of his first 11 major league games at third base, and was the designated hitter in the other, while batting fifth of sixth each time.

Gallo was batting second against the Dodgers after Shin-Soo Choo moved up a spot to lead off in place of DeShields.

''Joey's a good athlete, runs well, he's been out there before,'' manager Jeff Banister said. ''With the personnel that we have, this is what we felt would be the best look for us. ... This is not anything he hasn't been aware of. We talked about it in spring training.''

Odor spent five weeks at Round Rock, where he hit .355 with five homers in 107 at-bats in 30 games for the Express.

''All evaluations and reports were ... how good he was playing,'' Banister said.
