Rangers' Detwiler to DL, Fujikawa designated for assignment

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Japanese reliever Kyuji Fujikawa has been designated for assignment after only two appearances for the Texas Rangers, who also Sunday placed left-handed starter Ross Detwiler on the 15-day disabled list.

Fujikawa allowed three runs in 1 2-3 innings over two appearances after he was activated from the DL on Thursday.

''We brought him up, in part, because the window for the rehab assignment was over,'' general manager Jon Daniels said. ''You'd like to be a little more patient at times. I think circumstances dictated we couldn't be.''

The 34-year-old Fujikawa signed with Texas after spending the last two seasons with the Chicago Cubs. His time with the Cubs included a 14-month layoff following Tommy John surgery, and he started the season on the DL with a right groin strain.

Detwiler (0-5 in seven starts) reported soreness in his left shoulder after his loss against Kansas City on Thursday, the same day Fujikawa made his season debut.

Tanner Scheppers was recalled from Round Rock, and the Rangers selected the contract of right-hander Ross Ohlendorf from the Triple-A team. They were both in the bullpen for Sunday's series finale against Cleveland.

''It's no secret our bullpen has scuffled, and we feel we're at a point where we need to go with our best options now,'' Daniels said. ''With Ross and Tanner coming in now, I think hopefully they'll contribute helping things settle down a little bit.''

Texas relievers went into Sunday's game with a 4.75 ERA. The Rangers lost 10-8 on Saturday night after closer Neftali Feliz allowed three runs in the ninth inning, his third blown save in nine chances this season.

Scheppers had an 11.25 ERA in five appearances for Texas in April before being sent to Round Rock on April 27. He has had seven scoreless appearances for the Express.

Ohlendorf, who pitched in the majors from 2007-13, last had a major league appearance for Washington on Sept. 18, 2013. He was 2-1 with a 4.35 ERA in nine appearances at Round Rock.

Texas has 10 days to trade, release or outright Fujikawa to the minor leagues. He can refuse an assignment to the minors, and indicated to the Rangers last week before he was activated the he didn't want to go to Triple-A.

''Maybe it's a little different if he's cleared waivers and that reality is there,'' Daniels said.
