Quirky Worley stands out among aces

Published Mar. 20, 2012 3:52 a.m. ET

Vance Worley is an easygoing, mild-mannered person until he takes the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies.

That's when the quirky pitcher turns into Vanimal.

On a staff full of aces, Worley stands out for his appearance. He has a Mohawk haircut and wears glasses. But the 24-year-old righty fits in with Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels if you ignore his unique look and focus on his performance. He was 11-3 with a 3.01 ERA as a rookie last year.

Worley developed this attitude at Long Beach State University. He got his nickname as a freshman. But he didn't earn it until his junior year.
