Pujols gets congrats from Mr. October
It’s a small fraternity, and, really, only one man could welcome St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols to it.
After joining Reggie Jackson and Babe Ruth on Saturday as the only players to hit three home runs in a World Series game, Pujols spoke with Jackson by telephone Sunday morning.
“It was real nice,” Pujols said after the Texas Rangers tied the series with a 4-0 victory in Game 4. “He was real humble, telling me how blessed I was to be in the same place as him and Babe Ruth. He was really complimentary.
“I really appreciate him (taking) the time. He didn’t have to do it. That tells you right there what kind of man he is.”
Pujols put on a show for the ages in the Cardinals’ 16-7 victory in Game 3, setting a World Series record with 14 total bases while tying marks for hits (five) and RBI (six) in a Series game.
Jackson, 65, hit three homers for the Yankees to clinch the 1977 World Series against the Dodgers in Game 6.
Ruth accomplished the feat in 1926 and 1928 — both against St. Louis.
