Pitching staff carrying Cardinals
Even without ace Adam Wainwright, the St. Louis Cardinals pitching staff has been one of the team's strengths.
Entering play Monday, the Cardinals have a 2.71 team ERA.
According to Cardinals.com, "Last year's team ERA leaders, the Washington Nationals, actually finished with a 3.03 ERA [and] ... the last team to finish the season below 3.00 was the 1989 Dodgers."
Whether or not the Cardinals finish the year with the best ERA in baseball remains to be seen, but manager Mike Matheny certainly isn't doubting his club.
"They've done it this far," Matheny told Cardinals.com. "Why can't it be sustainable? I get it that there's a lot of numbers that say it would be hard to, but I don't want them even glimpsing at that."
