Pirates' Vogelsong has facial surgery to repair fractures

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 4:12 p.m. ET

MIAMI (AP) Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ryan Vogelsong has undergone surgery to repair multiple facial fractures suffered when he was hit by a pitch.

The team says the operation was performed Thursday at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, and Vogelsong is resting comfortably at home. He will be re-examined by team doctors next week, when an appropriate rehab timeline will be outlined.

A pitch from Colorado's Jordan Lyles struck Vogelsong in the face on May 23.

Vogelsong is 1-1 with a 3.74 ERA in 12 games this season, including two starts.
