Pirates RHP Hart has shoulder surgery

Published May. 5, 2010 1:47 a.m. ET

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Kevin Hart has had surgery to repair a torn labrum and will miss the rest of the season.

Hart will begin rehabilitation at the Pirates' complex in Bradenton, Fla. He could resume throwing as early as spring training, although the injury sometimes can require a year of recovery.

Before the shoulder problem was detected, Hart was 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in five games at Triple-A Indianapolis. His wildness during spring training cost him a chance to make the Pirates' opening-day rotation.

Hart was acquired last season in the trade that sent left-handers Tom Gorzelanny and John Grabow to the Cubs.
