Pirates P lifted in first vs. Cards
After walking Skip Schumaker and allowing Jon Jay's single, Ohlendorf pointed to the back of his right shoulder. Following a brief consultation with trainers, manager John Russell lifted him.
Ohlendorf (1-11) threw only eight pitches before being removed because of soreness and tightness in his right shoulder, but they were enough to give him his fifth consecutive loss as the cardinals won, 10-2. According to STATS LLC, only four starting pitchers — including Tom Glavine and Roger Clemens — have thrown fewer pitches in a loss dating to 1988.
Ohlendorf was relieved by Sean Gallagher. Albert Pujols then homered on Gallagher's belt-high pitch, a drive that cleared the Cardinals bullpen in center field and landed in the Pirates bullpen behind it.
Ohlendorf will have an MRI test on Tuesday.
''It got worse with each pitch. I didn't feel great warming up but I thought I could pitch,'' he said. ''Hopefully it's in the muscle and not the shoulder.''
Ohlendorf was pulled in the first inning for the second time in six starts because of medical reasons. He was struck on the right side of his face by Troy Tulowitzki's line drive on July 28 at Colorado, but rejoined the team the same night after being checked by doctors and did not miss any starts.
Ohlendorf came into the game 1-10 despite having a 2.35 ERA in his last 10 starts.
