Pirates' Kang starting to heat up at the plate

Published May. 11, 2015 7:51 p.m. ET

It took Jung Ho Kang a while to adjust to life in the Major Leagues, but that no longer appears to be the case.

The Pirates knew Kang had a ton of potential, hence the reason they signed the Korean free agent, but he simply needed time to adjust.

Given all that Kang was taking in – a new league, language and culture – it was a bit unreasonable to expect him to thrive right away, but now he appears to be figuring it out and the Pirates are ready to cash in on their investment.

“I'm impressed with his make-up,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I'm impressed with the mental strength that he's shown and the discipline. There's a lot going on with this guy.”

Entering play Monday Kang was hitting .333 and riding a four game hitting streak (three of those games were also multi-hit games).

“When he squares up a fastball, it's fun to see,” Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said.

The Pirates are just hoping they get to continue to see that.
