Former Pirates minor league manager Dale Sveum has interviewed to succeed John Russell as Pittsburgh's manager.

Sveum, a Pirates infielder in 1996-97, managed Double-A Altoona from 2001-03. He spent two seasons as a coach with the Red Sox before moving to the Brewers' staff. He was Milwaukee's interim manager at the end of the 2008 season, then was retained by manager Ken Macha as the hitting coach the last two seasons. Macha was fired at the end of the season.

Macha interviewed for the Pirates' job on Tuesday, along with longtime Pirates minor league staffer Jeff Banister. Previously interviewed were former major league managers John Gibbons and Eric Wedge and former Florida coach Bo Porter.
