Published Jul. 24, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired left-hander Wandy Rodriguez from the Houston Astros for a prospect package that includes outfielder Robbie Grossman and left-handers Rudy Owens and Colton Cain.

The Pirates received cash from the Astros in the trade to defray Rodriguez’s remaining salary. Rodriguez is earning $10 million this year, followed by $13 million next year and a $13 million player option in 2014.

Rodriguez is 7-9 with a 3.79 ERA in 21 starts for the Astros this season.

The Astros’ haul includes the No. 8 (Grossman), 13 (Cain) and 16 (Owens) prospects in the Pittsburgh organization, according to the latest Baseball America rankings.
