Pirates 1B Steve Pearce sprains ankle

Published May. 25, 2010 1:35 a.m. ET

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Steve Pearce has sprained his right ankle on a throw, forcing him out of a game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Third baseman Delwyn Young made a wild throw to first on Jonny Gomes' grounder in the second inning Monday night. Pearce chased down the ball, planted his right foot for a quick throw to second and twisted his ankle. Gomes was safe.

Pearce was examined on the field by a trainer and jogged in the outfield before remaining in the game. He left an inning later.

Pearce was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on May 4. He has been on a hitting tear, going 7 for 18 before the injury.
