Phils activate Lidge from disabled list

Published May. 31, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

The Philadelphia Phillies have activated right-handed closer Brad Lidge from the disabled list after he missed 18 games because of elbow stiffness.

Lidge had surgery on the elbow in January and didn't appear in a game until April 30. But his elbow felt stiff and was told to rest it after an MRI early this month revealed no structural damage.

He converted his one save opportunity this season and has a 2.70 ERA in 3 1/3 innings over four games.

Manager Charlie Manuel said on Monday before the Phillies game against Atlanta that Jose Contreras could work as the primary setup man. Contreras has three saves in three chances.

Philadelphia designated Nelson Figueroa for assignment to make room for Lidge on the 25-man roster.
