Phillies' Polanco sprains finger

Published Mar. 18, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco is day to day because of a sprained left ring finger.

The All-Star injured his hand diving back into first base on a pickoff play in the first inning of Philadelphia's win over Toronto on Saturday. X-rays were negative and he's expected to miss a few games. Ty Wigginton was in the starting lineup at third base against the Blue Jays on Sunday.

The Phillies are missing three-fourths of their infield. Ryan Howard and Chase Utley haven't played this spring. Howard's return in uncertain after having surgery on his Achilles. Utley has a chronic knee condition but hopes to play in a game soon.
