Published Aug. 11, 2010 4:57 a.m. ET

The Minnesota Twins optioned shortstop Trevor Plouffe to make room for Glen Perkins, Wednesday's starting pitcher.

The Twins announced the move after beating the Chicago White Sox 12-6 on Tuesday night and plan to recall the left-handed Perkins from Triple-A Rochester. He will start in place of Kevin Slowey, who has a sore elbow.

It will be his first appearance with the Twins this season after making 43 starts for them over the previous two, going 18-11. He was optioned at the end of March after battling a back problem in spring training and is 4-9 with a 6.08 ERA in 23 starts for the minor league club.

Slowey is expected to start Sunday against Oakland.
