Peavy sidelined with shoulder soreness

Published Mar. 21, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy is facing a late setback Monday in his long-time recovery from shoulder surgery after being sidelined with tendinitis in his right rotator cuff, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The right-hander will be prevented from pitching Thursday against the Chicago Cubs after team doctors sidelined the right-hander Sunday. The start of the season is also looking unlikely unless he responds well to anti-inflammatory medication.

The injury, which came as Peavy was also enduring a stomach virus, provided the first upset in his return to spring training but was said to be unrelated to the right shoulder muscle that saw him sit out the second half of last season following surgery in July.

Manager Ozzie Guillen will be forced to tweak his Opening Day roster if Peavy stays absent.

Guillen said he would maintain a tough stance over the return of the 29-year-old, who threw 83 pitches over 5 2/3 innings against the A's on Saturday, and was originally scheduled to pitch April 6 at Kansas City.

"Jake Peavy will pitch the day I tell him to pitch," Guillen said. "He's not going to convince me. I don't care. [He will return] when I get the go-ahead from our pitching coach and medical staff. I'm not going to get the go-ahead from him. I can't. Sorry. I can't."
