Padres trade Davis to Nats for Gonzalez
The San Diego Padres acquired infielder Alberto Gonzalez from the Washington Nationals on Monday for right-hander Erik Davis and cash.
Gonzalez will give the Padres infield depth. He made 37 starts last year, including 17 at shortstop and 10 at second base. He hit .247 with five RBIs in 114 games last season.
Davis combined to go 14-3 with a 3.52 ERA in 27 games started between Single-A Lake Elsinore, Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Portland last season.
The Padres also placed outfielder Mike Baxter on the 60-day disabled list. He had surgery last week to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb.
Earlier Monday, the Nationals trimmed their roster by putting right-hander Henry Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list, and right-handers Chien-Ming Wang and Elvin Ramirez on the 60-day DL. They also optioned left-hander Ross Detwiler, right-hander Collin Balester and outfielder Roger Bernadina to Triple-A Syracuse, and reassigned infielder Brian Bixler to minor-league camp.
