Padres' Moseley concerned about shoulder injury

Dustin Moseley and the San Diego Padres are trying to figure out the best course of action after the right-hander dislocated his left shoulder Tuesday night for the second time in seven weeks.

The injury happened on a swing each time, and the concern is how to prevent it from happening during his next plate appearance.

''He's got to be able to swing without it popping out of joint,'' San Diego manager Bud Black said. ''It's not like every time he swings it comes out. You just don't know when it's going to come out. Obviously, that's a little frustrating. It is a concern for his health.''

Moseley said Wednesday his arm felt ''pretty good,'' but he acknowledged he's not sure what happens from here.

''There's really no answer to that,'' Moseley said. ''I went to a really protective swing already to try and limit it from happening. Any time the ball elevates on me, my shoulders have to come up and puts me in a position to re-injure it.''

Moseley's latest shoulder injury came when he lined a shot down the right-field line in the third inning of Tuesday night's 6-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He grabbed his left shoulder after the swing and collapsed to the ground. After a couple of seconds, he got up and ran safely to first base.

The problem also occurred on June 8 against the Colorado Rockies. Moseley, who said the injury is extremely painful, came out of that home game immediately and skipped a start.

Moseley remained in the game against Arizona and allowed five runs, four earned, in seven innings.

Moseley's injury hurt the Padres after Rob Johnson hit a two-out triple in the fifth on Tuesday night. The pitcher came to the plate, attempted to bunt three straight times and struck out when he bunted foul with two strikes.

The Petco Park fans booed loudly as Moseley walked back to the dugout.

''Maybe they just didn't understand,'' Moseley said. ''It was sore, but I got through it. There's nothing I could do there. I couldn't swing like I wanted to.''

Neither Black nor Moseley was sure if the right-hander would make his next start on Sunday against Colorado.

Moseley is 3-10 with a 3.30 ERA in 20 starts this season, his first with San Diego.

Johnson left Tuesday's game in the top of the seventh inning after bruising the back of his right hand. X-rays were negative, but he was out of the starting lineup Wednesday against Arizona.
