Padre pitchers' ERA projected to improve

Published Jun. 4, 2015 8:09 p.m. ET

After a team ERA of 3.27 last year -- second-best in the National League -- the team’s 4.04 ERA this year has been surprisingly high, especially considering the additions of James Shields and Craig Kimbrel. One of the reasons for the jump in ERA may be the unusually high number of home runs the pitching staff has been giving up.

U-T San Diego points out that the Padres’ home run to fly ball ratio is the worst in the majors at 15% -- about four percent higher than the league average. James Shields and Ian Kennedy have particularly horrible HR/FB ratios of over 20%. Shields is tied with the Rockies’ Kyle Kendrick for the most home runs given up this year (15).

Petco Park has been yielding an unusually high number of home runs this year, so if that normalizes then so to should the Padres’ HR/FB ratio, and in turn their ERA.
