Orioles call up LHP Pedro Viola for Braves series

Published Jul. 1, 2011 8:02 p.m. ET

The Baltimore Orioles have recalled left-hander Pedro Viola from Double-A Bowie to give the bullpen another option against a Braves lineup stacked with left-handed hitters.

Manager Buck Showalter says Viola is needed as the Braves started six left-handed hitters, including switch-hitter Chipper Jones, on Friday night.

Viola was 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA and two saves at Bowie. He made one appearance, retiring each of the five Seattle batters he faced on May 30 in an earlier stint with Baltimore.

Viola replaces another left-hander, Brian Matusz, who was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after giving up eight runs and nine hits in 3 1-3 innings in a loss to St. Louis on Thursday night.
