News Corp. won't submit bid for Rangers

Published Aug. 3, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

After reports surfaced last week that News Corporation CEO Rupert Murdoch may be interested in submitting a bid for ownership of the Texas Rangers, those rumblings were dispelled a day before Wednesday's auction.

“FOX will not be submitting a bid for ownership of the Texas Rangers,” said Chris Bellitti, FOX Sports Networks’ Vice President of Communications, on Tuesday. “There will be no additional comment at this time.”

The Dallas Morning News reported last week, according to a source, that News Corp. was interested in potentially owning the MLB team to ensure continued TV rights for its FOX Sports unit.

The Rangers have three bidders for its auction at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday in Fort Worth, Texas: Pittsburgh sports attorney Chuck Greenberg, Rangers president Nolan Ryan and Texas energy magnate Ray Davis; Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban; and Houston investor Jim Crane.
