New York Mets: Noah Syndergaard Named Team MVP
Due to the regular season coming to a close, Bleacher Report recently named the MVP of each team. Who won the award for the New York Mets?
After reaching the World Series last season, the New York Mets have had some challenging moments this season. There was a stretch not too long ago that led to many writing off the Mets. Injuries to Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, and Steven Matz left the Mets’ rotation with a bunch of unknowns.
Those unknowns like Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman have done a great job filling in for the injured star pitchers. Veteran Bartolo Colon has been a consistent for the Mets’ rotation, and he was even named to the All-Star team.
However, it has been Noah Syndergaard who has been the ace of the staff this season, and he was chosen as the team MVP. In his first full season with the Mets, Syndergaard has totaled a 14-9 record, 2.60 ERA, and 218 strikeouts. The great season has earned Syndergaard being named the team MVP by Bleacher Report.
Every time Syndergaard takes the mound, he gives the Mets a chance to win. Due to all of the injuries to his teammates, it has been Syndergaard who arguably has claimed the ace label for the team.
Furthermore, with the playoffs being likely for the Mets, Syndergaard will be asked to lead the rotation in October. As of now, it appears the Mets will be playing the San Francisco Giants in the Wild Card game. The availability of Syndergaard for the one-game playoff is uncertain, as he is currently scheduled to start on Sunday against the Phillies.
While Syndergaard is certainly worthy of being the team MVP, the award also could have gone to Yoenis Cespedes. Like Syndergaard has led the rotation, Cespedes has carried the lineup for most of the season.
Finally, having two stars like Syndergaard and Cespedes might be enough to help the Mets win their potential Wild Card game.
