Nationals scratch Murphy with general leg soreness

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 6:58 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) The Washington Nationals scratched All-Star Daniel Murphy from the lineup Friday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates because of general leg soreness.

The team listed Murphy as day-to-day.

Murphy, who leads the majors with a .348 batting average, was set to bat third and play first base. It would've been the regular second baseman's third start at first this season.

The 31-year-old leads the Nationals with 117 hits and 66 RBIs, and has 17 home runs to trail only Bryce Harper (19) and Danny Espinosa (18).

With Murphy out, Clint Robinson will play first in the series opener against left-hander Francisco Liriano. Ryan Zimmerman remains on the 15-day disabled list with a left rib cage sprain.
