Nationals put RH Mattheus on DL

The Washington Nationals placed right-handed reliever Ryan Mattheus on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder before the start of their weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.

Mattheus faced two batters in the eighth inning of an 8-1 loss to Arizona on Thursday night and was removed from the game because his velocity was down. He was examined and placed on the disabled list. A corresponding move isn't expected until Saturday.

Mattheus is 2-2 with a 2.40 earned run average in 32 appearances.
