Mets OF Curtis Granderson wins Lou Gehrig Memorial Award

No one can deny what a great guy Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson is.

As a veteran player, he’s been there for the Mets both during the season and in the offseason. He’s a leader.  Yes, he’s had his slumps, but he’s still there with a smile on his face.

And when he shows up, he shows up.

Granderson was the Mets’ savior in Saturday night’s win again the Minnesota Twins — and he’s the savior for many youth.

Granderson has his own foundation called Grand Kids Foundation (how cute right? I love a good play on words). According to the website (which you all should check out), Granderson founded this organization back in 2007 to “aid positive youth development via education, physical fitness and nutrition — providing tools and resources for educational and societal advancement.”

Yes, Granderson is giving children opportunities they may not have originally had.

And because of this, Granderson won this year’s Lou Gehrig Memorial Award sponsored by Phi Delta Theta. He accepted the award Monday afternoon at Citi Field, where he stated how important it is for him to give back.

Additionally he encouraged everyone to get out there and volunteer.

“You don’t have to have the name. You can volunteer. You can do a bunch of great things.”

Preach Grandy, preach. As someone who works in the nonprofit world, I love this.

Granderson follows in great footsteps in receiving this award, as former beloved Mets pitcher John Franco won the award back in 2001.

As if all this isn’t enough, Granderson wants to give back even more. He set a huge charity goal for the offseason — in the month of November he wants to provide 1 million meals for families in both New York and his home city of Chicago.

He’ll do this through his “Grand Giving” initiative — a hunger-relief campaign that he is part of along with the Food Bank For New York City and FreshDirect.

Can anyone deny that Grandy is a great guy? I don’t think so. I wish there were more Grandersons in the world.

And that is exactly why Granderson is the Mets’ nominee for the annual Roberto Clemente award. So go ahead and #VoteGrandy if you haven’t!
