Matz heading to New York, could return to rotation Friday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) Mets left-hander Steven Matz says he will throw a bullpen session in New York on Wednesday, potentially putting him on track to return to the rotation Friday against Philadelphia.

Matz hasn't pitched since Aug. 14 because of an impingement in his throwing shoulder. He went through his final workout at the team's facility in Florida on Tuesday, playing some long toss and running through a few other drills. He says the workout went well and he feels ready to return.

Matz is 9-8 with a 3.40 ERA this season for New York, which entered Tuesday one game ahead of San Francisco and St. Louis in the NL wild-card race.
