Marlins' Bonifacio leaves with injured left thumb

Published May. 19, 2012 2:26 a.m. ET

Emilio Bonifacio left the Miami Marlins' first interleague game of the season with a strained left thumb.

Bonifacio singled to lead off the fifth inning against Cleveland. Indians starter Justin Masterson threw over to first base four times to keep the speedy center fielder close. In diving back to the first-base bag on one of the pickoff attempts, Bonifacio jammed his left hand. He shook it several times as he resumed his lead off the bag.

Bonifacio then was thrown out for the first time in 21 steal attempts.

At the end of the inning, Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen removed Bonifacio in favor of Gaby Sanchez, who went to first base, moving Greg Dobbs to left field and sending Bryan Petersen from left to center.
