Mariners pretty bewildered by Kyle Seager's ejection Thursday
The Seattle Mariners had a tough game on Thursday. Not only was their contest with the Baltimore Orioles rain-delayed, the M's also had plenty of opportunities to push across big runs and win - but they didn't, falling in the finale of the midweek set by a score of 5-4.
To make matters worse, third baseman Kyle Seager was ejected by home plate umpire John Tumpane in the fifth inning after he said some words regarding a called third strike.
As Seager told Bob Dutton of the News Tribune, the whole situation didn't make much sense to the Mariners: "My back was to (Tumpane),” Seager told Dutton. “I didn’t say anything I haven’t said before but, when I said stuff, I was walking away.”
Seager's manager Lloyd McClendon was more pointed with his criticism when speaking with Dutton:
“I’d like to say that’s baseball,” McClendon said, “but that’s not baseball. I didn’t think that was warranted…I don’t know. Maybe (Tumpane) got tired of the Orioles (complaining) about balls and strikes all day.”
M's veteran Willie Bloomquist was even more frank with expressing his frustration:
“You can’t even talk anymore. We’re competitors. It’s the middle of a key situation, and you drop an f-bomb. Everyone takes it so darn personal. It’s like, `Dude, we’re competing. It’s the heat of the moment. It’s nothing personal.’ And quick fuse, boom, you’re gone. That’s a big blow for us. That’s our five-hole hitter.”
Seager's ejection left Bloomquist in the fifth spot in the lineup, a cicumstance that wound up negatively affecting the M's later when Bloomquist hit twice with the bases loaded (and didn't come through either time).
