Mariners' Doug Fister to miss 1 start

Published Jun. 5, 2010 2:31 a.m. ET

Mariners right-hander Doug Fister, second in the AL in ERA, will miss his scheduled start Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels because of tightness and fatigue in his shoulder.

Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu said Friday that Fister's velocity was down Monday when he allowed five runs in seven innings in a loss to Minnesota.

The team then prodded Fister (3-3, 2.45 ERA) to find out if anything was bothering him. He reluctantly admitted he had discomfort in the shoulder over the last few days.

Left-hander Ryan Rowland-Smith (0-4, 7.24 ERA) will now start Saturday for the Mariners against Ervin Santana. Rowland-Smith has struggled this season and lost his rotation spot 2 1/2 weeks ago. Wakamatsu says he will be limited to 75-90 pitches against the Angels.

Wakamatsu noted that Fister is on pace to throw almost 240 innings this season and just needs a break.

The 26-year-old has thrown at least seven innings eight times in 10 starts this season.

``A young pitcher going as deep into ball games as he has, we kind of anticipated it,'' Wakamatsu said.

Seattle is hoping Fister misses just one start, but he could miss more. Fister says he is doing only therapy for now and that he hasn't been told when he can throw again.

``It's kind of a day-to-day thing,'' he said. ``Anytime you are not picking up a baseball, it's frustrating.''

Another Mariners starter is working his way back into the lineup - slowly. Shortstop Jack Wilson, out since May 6 because of a strained right hamstring, will begin a rehabilitation stint at Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday.

Starting pitcher Erik Bedard, who has yet to make his season debut following shoulder surgery last August, threw a bullpen session Friday. Wakamatsu said if he came out of that well, the left-hander will throw another bullpen early next week.
