Jason Vargas has been around long enough to know when he's got his best stuff working on the mound.

He's had it going for most of the past month.

It all came together for him Friday night as he held San Diego to just six singles for his third shutout this season as the Seattle Mariners beat the Padres, 6-0.

Vargas said when he's going good, ''the ball just feels good coming out of your hand, everything's kind of on time. When you're struggling it kind of feels like everything's not clicking at the right time. So it's one of those things when you do feel it's that (good) time you want to take advantage of it.''

Vargas (6-5) struck out seven and didn't walk a batter in his fourth career complete game. He is the first pitcher ever to have three shutouts at Safeco Field in the same season.

All three of his shutouts have come in his past six starts, beginning June 3.

''I can't say I've had a better stretch,'' he said. ''I've felt good like this before but never was able to string it together in such a short period of time.''

It was the ninth shutout for the Mariners this season while San Diego has been shut out a major-league-leading 13 times.

Adam Kennedy had two hits and two RBI while Jack Cust and Carlos Peguero each had a hit and a pair of RBIs.

Chase Headley had three of the Padres' six hits. Since April 29, he has hit .342 to push his season average now to .305.

''He was hitting his spots all night long,'' Mariners manager Eric Wedge said of Vargas. ''He did a good job of mixing it up, left, right, up, down, adding and subtracting with his velocity. He just did a great job.''

Dustin Moseley (2-8) allowed five runs, though only two were earned, in 4 2-3 innings.

Peguero hit a two-run single in the third inning after Moseley walked Jack Cust with the bases loaded.

''At this level, you can't fall behind in counts,'' Moseley said, ''and for me to pitch effectively I definitely can't fall behind in counts.''

In the fifth, Cust hit an RBI double to make it 5-0.

Brendan Ryan opened the scoring with a double in the first that was followed by Kennedy's RBI single.

Kennedy added a run in the sixth on a double of his own off Anthony Bass.

''The offense was very, very good tonight, consistent up and down the lineup,'' Wedge said. ''They squared up on the fastball and were aggressive at times and looked at a lot of pitches at times.''

The Padres had a four-game winning streak snapped. The Mariners have beaten the Padres in all four meetings this season.

NOTES: Padres 2B Orlando Hudson fouled a ball off his left shin in the second inning and had to be helped off the field. Alberto Gonzalez replaced him. ... Padres RHP Aaron Harang, on the DL with a bruised right foot, ran without pain today. ''That's a major step,'' manager Bud Black said. ... The Mariners have not announced Sunday's starter to replace Erik Bedard, who is on the DL, but Black thinks it could be Triple-A righty Blake Beavan, 5-3 with a 4.43 ERA in 16 starts for Tacoma. ... Mariners rookie 2B Dustin Ackley, hitting .300 in his first 12 games, sat out the game with bruised ribs. He is expected to play Saturday. ... The Padres and Mariners wore their 1984 uniforms.
