Maddon doesn't expect suspensions

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon doesn't expect any of his players will be suspended after three were ejected for arguing balls and strikes Friday.

Maddon was also thrown out by during the eighth inning of Friday night's 5-3 loss to St. Louis.

''There was an argument ... there was no physical bumping or grinding,'' Maddon said before Saturday night's against the Cardinals. ''I don't know why (there would be suspensions).''

Tampa Bay reliever J.P Howell was tossed by plate umpire Vic Carapazza when the left-hander threw his glove to the ground after allowing a three-run homer to Colby Rasmus and also spiked the new ball tossed to him by the umpire. Howell then walked toward the plate area and had to be restrained.

First base umpire Doug Eddings ejected Rays pitcher David Price and reserve infielder Elliot Johnson for comments made from the dugout.

''To start just randomly throwing people out of the game in the dugout, and they're not even on the field, I don't understand that at all,'' Maddon said. ''That just can really incite a situation as opposed to defuse it. I talked to both. Their hands were up in the air, they might have been yelling, but it wasn't like, specifically at anybody.

''So, what do you expect them to do?'' Maddon added. ''Sit on their hands. He's (Eddings) got to use good judgment there regarding not causing the situation to get even more (intense).''

Earlier in the eighth, Maddon was ejected by Carapazza for arguing from the dugout after Lance Berkman drew a two-out walk on 3-2 pitch.
