Los Angeles Angels: Should Jhoulys Chacin Start Next Season?

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

As the Los Angeles Angels begin the offseason, they must start tweaking the starting rotation. The Angels have a couple of pitchers who might be better off in the pen.

The Los Angeles Angels picked up starting/bullpen pitcher Jhoulys Chacin in early May this season. The Angels, coming off of multiple injuries needed a pitcher and fast. Chacin had his fair share of ups and downs this season. He transitioned from starter to bullpen back to starter throughout the season.

Chacin’s numbers were not great last season, he went six of eight with an ERA of 4.81. His WHIP was 1.44 and he complied 119 strikeouts this season.

He was average at best. Still, he is a free agent and can sign with any team during the winter meetings. He is still young at 29 and could be a decent bullpen player for any number of teams.

The Angels have a wide variety of pitchers coming into the offseason. The hope is the Angels can send C.J. Wilson and Jered Weaver packing and freshen up the fielding and the rotation without breaking the bank. Bringing back Chacin to the bullpen could do just that.

Let’s face it, Chacin isn’t an ace in this league. He seemed to pitch better in the bullpen than as a starter. The Angels need a strong bullpen that way Matt Shoemaker isn’t pitching eight innings every time he starts.

The Angels also have a couple of average/aging pitchers in the minors. Could we see Tim Lincecum back in an Angel uniform next season as a setup man? Could the Angels give Javy Guerra a chance at the closer post this coming season?

Most of these questions will be answered following the winter meetings. If Chacin remains and Angel, he’ll get a crack at the starting rotation. It’s like he’ll be the fifth and final starter if he makes it at all.
